Tour Itinerary
Day 1Fes → Ifrane → Cedar Forests → Midelt → Ziz Valley → Merzouga (Desert Camp)
Depart Fes and head into the Middle Atlas, where the air turns crisp and the scenery shifts to forests and highland light. Pause in Ifrane—often nicknamed the “Switzerland of Morocco”—for fresh mountain air and a beautiful contrast to what’s ahead.
Continuing through the cedar forests, you may have the chance to spot the local native monkeys, the Barbary macaques, in their natural habitat. From here, the route flows through Midelt, then south into one of Morocco’s most striking transitions: the Ziz Valley, where palms and oasis towns appear like a green ribbon against desert tones.
By late afternoon, you arrive in Merzouga, where the dunes rise like waves—vast, golden, and unmistakably Sahara. At golden hour, your desert transition begins:
- Camel trek at sunset across the dunes, or
- 4×4 transfer for maximum comfort.
Arrive to camp with lantern light, warm hospitality, tea, Berber fireside music and dance plus dinner under the stars.
Overnight: Saharaï-selected desert camp (Erg Chebbi area)
Saharaï moment: The first time you look up and realize you’ve only ever just seen a magnificent tapestry of stars for the very first time.
Day 2Merzouga → Ziz Valley → Midelt → Middle Atlas → Fes
Morning in the Sahara is soft and quiet. Sunrise is optional, though encouraged, followed by breakfast before beginning your return journey to Fes.
As you leave Merzouga, you pass through Erfoud, known for fossil-rich desert stone — a fascinating reminder that this region was once an ancient seabed. If you’d like, we include a short, reputable fossil workshop stop to see how these natural pieces are revealed and polished (curated and tasteful).
From there, the route flows back through the palm ribbon of the Ziz Valley, with scenic viewpoints and comfort stops timed to keep the day smooth. Midday, you pause for a Saharaï-style lunch — a calm, beautiful stop chosen for quality and atmosphere, so you get a true taste moment of quality local food along the way.
Then the landscapes lift again into the Middle Atlas, where the air turns crisp and green — arriving back in Fes in the evening with drop-off at your riad/hotel.
Arrive: Fes (evening)
Saharaï moment: A slow shift from desert silence to city soul.

FAQs: 2-Day Luxury Desert Tour: Fes to Merzouga Sahara Dunes
Is 2 days enough for a Fes to Merzouga desert trip?
Yes — this is the express Sahara format. You’ll reach the dunes, enjoy sunset, spend a full night in the desert, and return to Fes the next day.
How long is the drive from Fes to Merzouga (Erg Chebbi)?
It’s a long scenic drive day. We pace it with comfort stops, scenic viewpoints, and a well-timed lunch so it feels smooth rather than tiring.
What is the route from Fes to Merzouga on the 2-day tour?
The classic route runs through the Middle Atlas and inland Morocco — typically via Ifrane, cedar forests, Midelt, and the Ziz Valley before arriving in Merzouga.
Do we stop in Ifrane and the Middle Atlas on this tour?
Yes — most guests enjoy a short stop in Ifrane (often nicknamed the “Switzerland of Morocco”) and the Middle Atlas landscapes as a beautiful contrast before the desert.
Can we see Barbary macaques on the way to Merzouga?
Possibly. The Middle Atlas cedar forests are one of the places you may encounter Barbary macaques. Sightings aren’t guaranteed, and we observe respectfully (no feeding).
What’s included in the Merzouga desert camp overnight?
Your camp night includes the dunes arrival experience (camel or 4x4), dinner, breakfast, and the classic Sahara atmosphere (lantern light and starlit sky). Luxury suite upgrades are available.
Do we have to ride a camel to the camp?
No — you can arrive by 4x4 transfer instead (same dunes, different style).
Is the desert camp comfortable?
Yes — proper beds, quality linens, and an elevated dining experience. Upgrades are available depending on your tier.
Is this 2-day tour private?
Yes — private vehicle, private driver/guide, and flexible pacing.
What’s the best time of year for the 2-day Fes to Merzouga tour?
Spring and autumn are typically ideal for comfort. Summer and winter are possible with smart timing and layers for cooler desert nights.
Is this itinerary suitable for families or older travelers?
Yes, if you’re comfortable with the longer drive days. We tailor pacing and breaks to keep the journey comfortable.
Can we add a boutique hotel night instead of only a camp?
On a strict 2-day format, it’s usually one overnight. If you want both camp + boutique hotel, we recommend upgrading to a 3-day version for a more relaxed pace.
